In the field of modern construction, the cracking problem of mortar has always been an important factor affecting project quality and durability. In recent years, basalt chopped filaments, as a new reinforcing material, have shown excellent anti-cracking effects in mortar modification, providing innovative solutions for construction projects.
Material properties
Basalt chopped wire is a fiber material made by fusing natural basalt ore and then drawing and chopping it, which has three core advantages:
1. high strength properties: tensile strength of 3000 MPa or more, 3-5 times more than traditional PP fiber
2. Excellent alkali resistance: remains stable in alkaline environments with pH values up to 13.
3. Three-dimensional and chaotic distribution: short cut filaments of 3-12mm in length can form a three-dimensional reinforcing network in the mortar.
Anti-cracking mechanism
When the mortar produces shrinkage stress, the uniformly distributed basalt fibers effectively prevent the expansion of micro-cracks through the “bridging effect”. Experiments show that the addition of 0.1-0.3% volume rate of basalt short cut wire can make mortar:
- Early plastic shrinkage cracks reduced by 60-80
- Drying shrinkage is reduced by 30-50
- Improvement of impact resistance by 2-3 times
Engineering Advantages
Compared to traditional fiber materials, basalt fiber chopped strands in mortar show:
- Better dispersibility: excellent compatibility with cementitious materials, no agglomeration.
- Outstanding durability: no rust, no aging, service life of more than 50 years.
- Convenient construction: can be directly mixed with dry mortar raw materials without affecting the workability.
At present, this technology has been successfully applied to high-speed railway ballastless track plate, underground pipeline corridor, building exterior wall plastering and other projects, and the actual test shows that it can reduce the incidence of structural cracks by more than 70%. With the development of green building, this kind of reinforcing material with natural materials and excellent performance will certainly be more widely used.
