Project Overview:  

To enhance the high-temperature deformation resistance, moisture damage resistance, and fatigue durability of asphalt pavement while extending roadway service life, the Science and Technology Bureau of Haining Municipality authorized the experimental paving of specific sections along the Jiaxing-Shaoxing Expressway Haining Interchange Connector and Provincial Highway 08. The test sections adopt a structural composition comprising a 20 cm cement-stabilized crushed stone subbase, a 6 cm AC-20C asphalt concrete intermediate layer, and a 4 cm AC-16C asphalt concrete surface course, with chopped basalt fibers incorporated into the asphalt mixture. Our company supplied all fiber materials for this project.  

Product Overview:  

Chopped basalt fiber is manufactured by cutting continuous basalt filament strands and is coated with a silane-based sizing agent. As a natural silicate mineral fiber, it exhibits excellent chemical resistance, particularly outstanding alkali resistance, making it an ideal substitute for polyester and lignin fibers. Its inclusion significantly enhances the high-temperature stability, low-temperature crack resistance, and anti-fatigue performance of asphalt mixtures.

Construction overview: 

In this project, an automatic fiber feeder is used for fiber addition. The equipment is measured synchronously with the mixer, and the fiber is put into the mixing pot together with the hot aggregate.During construction, the fiber dosage is strictly controlled, which is about 3 kg per cubic meter of mixture, to ensure uniform adsorption of asphalt and stable oil-stone ratio.The mixing temperature is controlled between 155-165℃. After the paving is completed, it needs to be allowed to stand for maintenance for 24 hours or until the road temperature is below 50℃ before it can be opened for traffic.A total of 2.75 tons of chopped basalt fibers were used in this project.

Project summary:

Through the paving of this test section, chopped basalt fibers have shown many enhancement effects in asphalt pavement.:

1.Improve structural stability: the fibers form a spatial network structure in the mixture to enhance the overall mechanical properties;

2.Enhance the ability to resist water damage: thicken the asphalt film, reduce peeling, and improve water stability;

3.Improve temperature adaptability: significantly improve high temperature deformation resistance and low temperature cracking resistance;

4.Extend fatigue life: effectively delay the destruction process of asphalt mixture and extend the service life of pavement.

As a green and efficient road-use reinforcing material, chopped basalt fiber has good promotion value and application prospects.
